JOHN PIPER, AN EXHIBITION OF PRINTS

John Piper, a pivotal figure in the history of 20th Century British art, experienced a fertile and diverse career. Once a painter of abstracts, it was in the advent of war and the possibility of invasion that Piper’s work shifted significantly from international modernism to more naturalistic scenes. Sensing the threat of destruction, Piper developed a preciousness for England’s heritage and thus opened his art to location and a sense of place, history and identity, belonging and memory, all elements that have come to be synonymous with his work.
