Michael Sanders and Emma Williams

Thompson’s Gallery in Aldeburgh, Suffolk are delighted to be hosting a two-man show with Emma Williams and Michael Sanders.

Artist Emma Williams is a painter in her prime, currently exhibiting widely throughout England and Ireland. Her works can be found in many private collections including Norwich Union, Norfolk and St James hospital, Dublin. Emma's time spent studying printed textile design at Huddersfield University is strongly evident in her paintings, using flat perspective and bold colour with dramatic effect.

The still life style shines out strong, vibrant and glorious, bringing a contemporary vision to a grand old artistic tradition. Demand for her work is steadily increasing and Emma Williams is now one of the most sought after painters working in Britain.

After leaving Art School with a Fine Art Degree, Michael Sanders moved to North Norfolk. At this time he painted landscapes mainly in watercolour and became a well known local artist. As he began to travel more in Europe his painting style evolved and he worked a lot more in oils, sometimes on much larger canvasses. He painted in Sienna, Florence and Paris and became more interested in texture and strongly contrasting light and shadow. . He later moved to the medieval town ofValbonnein the south ofFranceand became well-known for his Mediterranean images of café scenes, sun-baked buildings and cool, shadowy piazzas. It was during the last couple of years there that he felt a real urge to return to the UK where he now has two studios: one in Norfolk and one in Cornwall. He won a prize in the Laing competition and his work was chosen for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters annual exhibition in the Mall Galleries.

Michael Sanders’ calm, atmospheric landscapes and Emma Williams’ playful, patterned still life not only complement, but contrast with each other for an exciting show.

“It is the ever-changing light that inspires me – sometimes bright and sharp and at other times, hazy and atmospheric. I aim to capture the essence of the scene I am painting and how it alters with the change of the seasons.” Michael Sanders

"My paintings are textured and always vivid - evoking memories of a time space and mood.  Many visits to Cornwall have been a constant source of inspiration, influencing my particular approach to interiors and landscapes." Emma Williams
