Artist Statement
When starting a sculpture I am never quite sure how it will end up. I always do lots of drawings and maquettes working through to the final big sculpture, modelled in plaster and then cast into bronze. My sculptures are figures, birds and animals. For influences, I have learnt the most useful help in studio working methods from George and David, my village builder, old friends and in the physical, hardworking atmosphere of the bronze foundry.
Christopher Marvel sculptures are sited in both public and private locations, in the UK, USA, France, Spain and Germany.
I enjoy the hard physical work and atmosphere at the busy foundry and the spirit of making things work. Other sculptors have always been generously willing to share their latest clever techniques for overcoming difficulties.
Seeing two goats crated up for California or a Fisherman's Head bound for Australia gives me a thrill, as does a small fountain carefully sited in an exquisite courtyard. Sculpture really does seem to add that 'specialness' to a location. An extra stillness or elevation that the viewer can absorb effortlessly whilst walking round. A new angle reveals a completely different line -- sculpture should invite us to keep looking."
