Denis was born in London in 1948 and grew up just outside Watford. He studied for an MA in Fine Art at Watford, Hornsey and Ravensbourne Colleges of Art from 1966-72. He also has an art teacher’s certificate from the University of London. His career began in film animation and later illustration. Successfully combining both, he now paints full time.

Subject Matter

My work is best described as photo-realist. I like to use the camera as an extension of myself, to pursue my interest in working with focus and perspective. The shop window in ‘Manhattan’, with its numerous reflections, has a kind of complexity that can only arise with the use of a camera. The camera remains a tool in my art, it helps make, but does not actually create, the art itself. The paintings may look photographic, but they are pure painting. I paint landscapes or cityscapes, trying to elevate my subjects from the mundane to something of significance, then beauty.
