Nick Grove RSMA

Nick Grove RSMA was born in 1974 and works representationally in oils. After completing a Fine Art Degree in 1996, Nick embarked on a successful career as a photographer, winning national and international awards before returning to his first passion of painting in 2017. In July 2023 Nick was elected a member of the The Royal Society of Marine Artists.

As well as a renowned landscape painter, Nick is also an accomplished portrait painter. Notable exhibitions include The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. It can take several months to complete a large portrait which he creates in his studio.

Nick also teaches figurative drawing and painting at schools as well as privately, and lectures as an industry expert on subjects relating to art and artists.

Exhibitions of note include The Royal Society of Marine Artists, of which Nick is now a member; The Royal Institute of Oil Painters at the Mall Galleries; and the Best of British exhibition at the Gallery Holt.

Artist Statement

"My decision to commit to becoming an artist at age 43 was driven by a life long desire. Looking back now I admit that I didn't know what I didn't know about painting, and had no realistic idea of what it meant to be an artist. Fast forward four years and I am at the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in my life: as a professional artist, and how I got here has had a powerful and profound personal effect.

"My paintings are my expression of a particular place and period of time. I like to paint on location, exploring an area and stopping to capture scenes that spark my interest. I include the things I notice and paint what I see. I'm not interested in capturing a frozen moment in time or a romantic interpretation, instead I want my paintings to be honest and truthful representations of my experience. Above all I want my work to be beautiful creations that speak to people, which reflect our living experiences: full of light and dark, struggle and hope."
