One year in Harpenden!

In addition to our established galleries in London and Aldeburgh Suffolk, Megan Thompson opened the Harpenden branch in October 2021 after moving her family here during the lockdown. Her decision was cemented by the sculpture positioned in front of this soon-to-be gallery– by artist and longstanding friend John Brown.

Thompson's Gallery is family-owned and run since its opening by John and Sue Thompson in 1982. For over four decades, we have specialised in Modern British and Contemporary artwork, and we have built a reputation for putting an informative and approachable face to art dealership. We pride ourselves in sourcing and promoting outstanding contemporary work by both established and emerging talents that will stand the test of time. A large part of our business is in also the secondary market, focused on buying and selling Modern British artists. These highly regarded and well-known 20th Century British figures were once regular exhibitors in the early years of the gallery, including Royal Academicians Fred Cuming RA, Mary Fedden RA, and Sir Terry Frost RA.

Throughout the year, our London, Harpenden and Aldeburgh galleries offer a wide range of exhibitions carefully curated by our entire team. We take pride in sourcing great work. Our most recent addition to the Harpenden galleries exhibition calendar is St Albans-based artist Gail Olding, who captured our attention with her elegant and arresting pieces.

We focus on partnerships with other local business, most recently hosting exhibitions with Nobu Hotel on Portman Square and the Hyatt Churchill in London.

WHAT'S NEXT IN HARPENDEN?

All three galleries are also represented at major domestic and international art fairs. In forthcoming months, we are exhibiting at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea and the London Art Fair in Islington.

While our London Gallery will be opening its exhibition calendar in September with the Autumn Exhibition, here in Harpenden we will be hosting a solo exhibition by celebrated sculptor Max Tannahill in October followed by a curated Christmas exhibition offering small, unique, and affordable works, many from our core list of artists — perfect for festive gifting!

Throughout the year, we will be hosting a wide range of events at the gallery, Private Views, Meet the artist and evenings focused on "Advice When Buying Contemporary Paintings." We will be hosting an event explaining the government-backed incentive of "OWN ART," a buying scheme for contemporary artwork that splits payments over 10 months at 0% interest.

The welcome from the Harpenden community has been humbling, We hope to continue to develop our relationships with our neighbours. We have met new clients and re connected with some of our Aldeburgh buyers who live in the area!

We look forward to another exciting year ahead.
