Richard Holliday started his career in stone as an apprentice stonemason in Cambridge in 1980 and has been in Cornwall since 1994.
Initial training concentrated on the architectural side and he worked on many major buildings such as Westminster Abbey, Hatfield House, Kings College Chapel and Ely Cathedral.
In 1989 he formed his own company in Cambridge with three other partners. Within this period the emphasis was on moving toward a more creative narrative. He worked to commission for private clients, public authorities and large institutions The list of projects includes Victoria Square, Birmingham GUARDIANS, Sheffield Peace Garden fountain bases and The Battle of Britain memorial in Folkstone. Many of us are familiar with the immensely powerful memorial to the ANIMALS IN WAR, in London's Park Lane.
In 2004 Richard moved to Cornwall to concentrate his considerable knowledge, influences and skills on sculpture of a more individual nature for exhibition and for private commissions.
Richard Holliday says his influences are modernism, nature, the ancients, and vice and virtue in society.
A thorough understanding of his materials and a highly technical approach to his work allow for the precise form and line which characterise many of his realistic and abstract sculptures.
