Robert Kelsey DA MUniv PAI FRSA: A Life in Light and Colour
For more than three decades, Robert Kelsey has been a pivotal artist at Thompson’s Gallery. Since first exhibiting with us in 1993, his paintings have captivated collectors with their luminous colour, expansive horizons and evocative coastal scenes. His work remains devoted to the meeting of land, sea and sky, and the extraordinary transformations of light.
Born in Glasgow in 1949, Kelsey studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1966 to 1970 under tutors including David Donaldson, Alexander Goudie and James Robertson. After pursuing a career in art education alongside his own practice, he became a full-time painter in 1995, following his first London solo exhibition in 1994. He has since established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary Scottish landscape painting.
Scotland’s west coast and islands remain at the heart of Kelsey’s work. With family roots on Barra, he has returned repeatedly to the Western Isles, drawn to their expansive beaches, turquoise waters and immense skies. From Iona’s brilliant sands to Ardnamurchan’s rugged landscapes, these shores provide an enduring source of inspiration.
Rooted in the Scottish artistic tradition, Kelsey greatly admires the Scottish Colourists Samuel John Peploe and Francis Cadell for their bold colour and expressive freedom. His own style, however, is unmistakable. Confident brushwork and atmospheric sensitivity create compositions that feel both spacious and intimate, where emerald and aquamarine waters meet warm sands beneath luminous skies.
His travels have further enriched his understanding of coastal light. The Amalfi Coast, from Sorrento to Ravello, offers a vivid contrast to the Western Isles, with warmer light, vibrant colours and dramatic terrain. Across these landscapes, Kelsey captures each place’s distinctive character while retaining the clarity and confidence that define his work.
His paintings grow from direct experience. Through sketches, colour studies and small oil paintings made on location, he gathers impressions before developing many larger works in the studio. Observation and memory combine to create landscapes grounded in reality yet shaped by personal response.
Beyond depicting a view, Kelsey’s paintings convey a feeling. Quiet, often deserted beaches draw the eye towards distant headlands and open water, evoking stillness and the pleasure of experiencing the changing light beside the sea.
Rooted in Scotland and enriched by the wider world, Kelsey’s work celebrates the restorative beauty of the coast. As we mark more than thirty years of exhibiting his paintings at Thompson’s Gallery, we are delighted to present this latest collection, celebrating an artist whose enduring curiosity and devotion to light and colour continue to captivate us.
