Working in distinct but complementary ways, both artists explore the shifting character of the landscape through light, colour, and composition. Price's work is driven by atmosphere and intuitive response to nature, while Tweedie's paintings often balance observation with structure, capturing familiar scenes with a subtly imaginative edge.

 

Jane Price is a contemporary painter whose practice has traditionally been rooted in atmosphere, light, and an intuitive response to the natural world, often exploring woodland and landscape through layered colour, gesture, and shifting form.

 

Her recent series, Silent Language, marks a notable evolution in her practice and a departure from earlier landscape focused work. In this new body of work, Jane turns her attention to the relationship between people and body language, exploring gesture, connection, and unspoken communication. She describes this shift as an evolutionary change in her practice.

 

The works are characterised by a delicate yet contrasting use of colour and pattern, painted with a precision that gives the compositions a subtly collage-like quality. There is a quiet sensitivity at play throughout the series, with each painting offering a tender, observational moment that encourages the viewer to consider relationships that extend beyond the image itself. It is a bold and engaging new direction, retaining her sensitivity to light and composition while opening up a more figurative, human centred narrative.

 

 

A mostly self-taught artist, James Tweedie depicts the real world with a stroke of the surreal, to fill each painting with a sense of mystery, like that of a dream. He began his art career in 1972 and since then his work has been exhibited widely across the UK and Europe. His work can be found in many collections across the UK and North America.
 
While born in Manchester, Tweedie moved when he was young to Glasgow, where he currently lives and works. He exhibits regularly in London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, his last solo show at Thompsons was held in 2017.
